Dentures can’t get cavities, but you still need to brush your teeth. Food residue and bacteria can cling to your dentures, leading to unpleasant odors and affecting your dental health. It’s important to brush your dentures after every meal, but nobody wants to take their teeth out at a restaurant. It’s tempting to leave your dentures in your mouth when brushing them, but you shouldn’t make it a habit. Here’s why it’s best to take your dentures out when brushing them.
It’s Best to Remove Your Dentures
Food residue and plaque can get trapped underneath your dentures. While it is entirely possible to brush your dentures while they are in your mouth, you won’t be able to clean underneath them. This can lead to an overgrowth of harmful bacteria that can lead to sores, inflammation, and infections. It’s okay to brush them occasionally while wearing them, but don’t use any toothpaste to avoid damaging them.
How to Care for Your Dentures Properly
Instead, you can keep your dentures odor-free and looking their best by cleaning them correctly using a few tips:
- Use the Correct Dental Products: Do not use any abrasive dental products to clean your dentures because they can scratch them. Not only can this make your dentures look discolored, but the scratches can trap bacteria and food residue. It’s best to always use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a mild hand soap or dishwashing liquid. Do not use toothpaste because it is abrasive.
- Brush After Eating: It’s important to brush your dentures after eating to remove food residue. If you can’t get to your toothbrush, give them a quick rinse under warm water. Never expose them to hot or boiling water because they can warp.
- Soak Your Dentures Nightly: Besides brushing your dentures, soak them in an overnight solution to kill any bacteria missed by brushing. It will also give your mouth a break to keep your gums healthy.
In addition to brushing your dentures, visit your dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup. They’ll keep your mouth healthy and your dentures looking their best to get the most from your investment.
