People have used false teeth to restore their smiles for centuries, and the technology has only improved over that time. Modern dentures are both incredibly lifelike and so comfortable that patients often forget that they’re there, which has made them a popular way to address tooth loss. If you’re interested in getting dentures, you’re probably curious about how much time it can take to get a set. Here’s an overview of the process of getting dentures and how long it can take.
The First Step Is Your Consultation
Before you can get dentures, you’ll have to have a consultation with your dentist. During this initial meeting, your dentist will examine your mouth to determine the health of your soft tissues and remaining teeth. Any tooth decay and gum disease will have to be cleared up before the treatment can continue, and in some cases, the dentist may recommend that the remaining healthy teeth be removed to make room for the appliance. Your dentist will also explain the recommended course of treatment and answer any questions you may have.
Extractions
Some patients will need to have teeth extracted to make room for dentures. This appointment will be scheduled after the initial consultation and will be rendered painless by local anesthetics. After this is completed, the gums will need about six to eight weeks to completely heal. Once the gums have fully recovered, treatment can move on to the impression stage.
Impressions and Bite Check
Once your gums have fully healed, your dentist will take an impression of your mouth so your dentures can be specially designed to fit your gums. You’ll probably have to bite into a tray filled with a semi-liquid material. It only takes a few minutes for this material to harden, and then your impressions will be sent to a lab that will begin manufacturing your dentures.
During the same appointment, your dentist will use wax blocks to model the shape, size, and orientation of your new teeth. They will consult with you during this process so that the design fits your needs and preferences.
Manufacturing Dentures
Once the lab has your bite impressions, a skilled technician will put your permanent set together over the course of a day or two. This set will be sent back to your dentist so you can try them on to test their fit and appearance. Your dentist will make any needed adjustments and the appliance will be sent back to the lab to be finalized. After about two or three days, they’ll be sent back to your dentist for a final fitting. They will make any last-minute adjustments and send you on your way to enjoy your beautiful new smile.
All in all, the whole process of getting dentures can take anywhere from six weeks to three months. Consulting with your dentist can give you a better idea of how long it will take to address your particular needs.
